Another view of Nickelsville
Another glimpse of daily life at Nickelsville - the tent city. Nickelsville is not the ONLY tent city in Seattle. There are several others in the area.
This group of folks was more than happy to allow me to snap their picture. Nickelsville has two campfires which burn pretty much around the clock. This is their ONLY source of heat. Today's temperatures maxed out at about 40F, and will likely drop down into the 20s as the evening progresses.
The same fires are also used for cooking at times, although they do have an assortment of old barbeques to use when they receive donations of propane.
At the other end of camp, a couple was cooking pancakes over a fire pit.
For some folks, Nickelsville is a way of life, but for most it is a place to be for the moment with hopes of leaving in the near future. Last year I even met a gentleman with a PhD! No one is immune. The residents come from all walks of life.
I know the images may be hard to look at... but this is life! And for any of you who think I may be exploiting the homeless - many of these folks are my friends. I have been their official / unofficial camp photographer for the last year and a half that I have been volunteering at the camp.
Nickelsville even has their own Facebook page. And then there are the happier moments like the double wedding that took place back in May of 2012!
