I had heard that the Christmas decorations at Polesden Lacey were controversial so sister J and I decided to look for ourselves. I had also heard that it would be very busy, especially on a sunny Saturday, so we were there by 10.30 am to beat the rush. The cars were already pouring in (extra). The house opened at 11 and we were amongst the first to go in. Some of the rooms were depicted as an Edwardian Christmas with sumptuous arrangements, the dining table was groaning with a luxurious Christmas feast. The billiard room was the first to have been given the modern treatment with these dramatic mobiles creating intriguing patterns on the ceiling. (Silly Saturday?) The other modern rooms were not as attractive, but they did make a change from the traditional Christmas.
After the house we visited the Christmas Market, situated across the garden in a row of cabins, and enjoyed a browse in the National Trust shop. It was too cold to spend much time in the garden, but I was attracted by dried grasses near the entrance. (Extra)
