Warm applause for a cold landing

We left the hotel in Dublin very early to get a flight back to Scotland.   It  departed on time but we were told en route that there was thick freezing fog at Glasgow airport and about ten minutes before landing we were all asked to switch off (not put in  flight mode but actually off) all electronic devices as we would be making a landing in "low visibility".

Coming over Glasgow to turn above the Campsies it was fascinating to see clearly for miles around,  where there was bright sunshine .  The exception was the valley of  the Clyde which was covered in white cloud, though at a very low level.

The plane steadily descended towards this blanket and then sank into it.  Immediately we could see nothing at all but it was clear we were very low and getting lower.  There was absolute silence on board but after a minute Cathleen suddenly said she could see the ground and a second later we had landed.

There was a collective exhaling  of breath and then somebody started applauding the pilot , which everybody joined in.

Taxi-ing into the stand it was still not possible to see very much as my main picture shows.

However driving back to Glendaruel we came out of the fog around Dumbarton and it was then a lovely journey.

In the glen itself many of the trees looked as if they had been dipped in spun sugar , though my extra photo doesn't do this amazing effect full justice.   It was also still below freezing when we got home  and has been for the rest of the day.
