Tawny Owl 46/52
The theme this week is No Chimping. This apparently means no looking at the screen to check the capture is good. This shot qualifies as I wasn't expecting an owl to fly over me and had one chance to get one shot. My 5D battery and camera have stopped talking to each other so it is in the equivalent of "Limp Home Mode" and not allowing me to use maximum 6fps I would have preferred on this fast moving subject.
Tawny Owls can make a variety of calls but the most familiar are their "kee-wick" and "hoot" sounds. The hooting or “twoo” sound is usually made by the male and is a territorial call. You can sometimes hear a female responding to a male's “twoo” call with a sharp “kee-wick”. This is all we can hear at night in Devon... there's loads of these owls, but you rarely see one.
