Northern Flicker

These are among the most elusive birds around here.  They're very skittish and the minute they know they're being watched they disappear.  They have a very distinctive patch of white tail feathers so when I opened the curtains this afternoon and saw three white butts in retreat, I knew I should have been sneaky instead of flinging the curtains open.
