Info for the younger person- there was only one phone in the house and it was situated in the hall so you could hear it wherever you were in the house.
Some phones were a party-line. A shared line so if the other person was using the phone you would pick your phone up to use it and you could overhear their conversation. You had to wait 'till they were finished speaking.
When you answered the phone you said your number so you could immediately tell if you had a wrong number- it did happen. My number was Fence Houses 2044. My aunt's was Dunstable 61069.
People usually only spent a few minutes on the phone as the calls were expensive and you paid by the minute.
