The Army
I mention the Salvation Army around about this time every year. Without the Army I wouldn't be here - my parents met when dad played the cornet in the band and my mum was a chorister. Even as a born-again atheist I will cross the street to give money to the SA because of the work they do on the streets; they work with street sleepers, and others, who are often outside the reach of state intervention. So each year I send them a few bob rather than spending money on Christmas cards. This isn't "virtue signalling" but simply something which I hope might make a difference, however small. I mention it here each year in case anyone is considering how they might pay a bit back.
