Up in the tree

Well equiped some gardeners came up to a tree in our street and started to cut it down to pieces. From then on they had some hours of work as all was to be shredded into wood-chips.
They told me they had to take this tree down for its Elm-disease... but how do they get contaminated?!
I hope not via all the dust of shredding the cut off sick tree.
