Kokako

On Tiritiri Matangi Island, not far from Auckland.  At a water trough, and habituated birds.  I don't like the bands, either.  In fact, I'm not really keen on photographing birds at all!  However, Tiri is a fantastic showcase restoration project. Vegetation has recovered from almost bare slopes with a few partially vegetated gullies to mostly bush cover by active planting and management.  Through planned introductions, a relatively natural community, based mainly on birds (this is New Zealand, with almost no native mammals) has been created.  So visitors can see a slice of New Zealand as it might have been before humans arrived.  I'd previously been fortunate to visit both Mangere and Rangitira on the Chathams, similarly predator-free islands, with abundant bird life.  It would be brilliant if predators could be removed from the mainland as well, but that is probably a way off.  Stewart Island, maybe.
