Don't Get the Wrong Idea
We went to Berwick today with the express purpose of changing some cash into Bank of England notes. (Some of you might not know that we issue our own banknotes here in Scotland, and sometimes shopkeepers south of the Border are reluctant to accept them.)
So, before you assume that I'm panicking over the election result and transferring my assets before we start using the groat instead of the pound up here - I was just getting a supply of folding money for distributing to sundry young friends and relatives who live Down South.
Any excuse to go to Berwick, a town full of quirks and character, nice cafes and independent shops. After staying up half the night watching the results, and tossing and turning the other half wondering what next, it was a welcome distraction to wander and reflect on the regime changes this place has seen over the centuries. It has weathered those storms, and I guess it will survive the ongoing shenanigans.
