We crossed the pass and on the bare shoulder caught the full blast of a violent north- westerly hail storm. The noise was tremendous, the visibility scant and road traction slid away. I snuck down the Caiano road away from traffic. This is the hub of the village, perched at 800m.

Watching the election result via Twitter was sickening. Later today we both felt a kind of relief that at least it was over.

I’ve been through the full gamut of emotions - rage, fear, slivers of lightness in the dark, hatred, astonishment, despair and a desire just to hide from the nightmare of it all. But despite the big majority it will not be plan sailing and I wonder if Johnson will be up to the job.
