Dumgoyne and the Mains Plantation

The distinctive steep peak of Dumgoyne is a local landmark on the edge of the Campsie Fells. It is a volcanic plug created when magma hardened within a vent on an active volcano. It is 1,401 ft high and a popular climb for hill walkers from Glasgow. While the walk from the road is only 2.5 miles, the slopes of Dumgoyne are very steep and rough.
Mains Plantation is improvement-era broadleaved woodland on the outskirts of Milngavie of ash, oak, beech, birch and Scots pine. Some areas have very mature trees planted in the 18th century. It is a local gem with public access paths. This shot captures the canopy in the orangy light of the low winter sun.
