South Beach

One of Stornoway's main thoroughfare runs along the line of what used to be a beach. The pink building on the right is the arts centre An Lanntair (The Lantern), and the ornate, dark-brown building is the former Town Hall. This was built in 1905, burnt down in 1918 and rebuilt in 1929. After the rearrangement of local authorities in 1974, the Town Council was abolished and became part of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Council.
