Nutritional advice on West Street
The ad on the public phone box offers a family of 4 a meal for 20 quid: looks like it consists of 2 pizzas, some potatoes wedges, something masquerading as garlic bread, perhaps, and a large bottle of coca-cola. Well, for a start to take advantage of this offer you'd have to travel out of Fishguard which doesn't even have a Domino's pizza branch. Then, their deep pan pepperoni pizza which features 'a thick base, slathered with butter, two layers of cheese and toppings' supplies 2,420 calories and 130 grams of fat. Coca-cola has been criticised on many counts including its connection with obesity, tooth decay and inclusion of fructose syrup from genetically manipulated corn.
The results of a major dietary study, based in a several countries, has just published its findings which indicate a strong association between the consumption of fast-food and take-aways and the incidence of asthma and allergies in children and teenagers.
I couldn't help hoping that the young family strolling past would not be taking advantage of this meal 'bargain'. They would do much better - financially, nutritionally and morally - to patronise our soon-to-be up-and-running new Transitions cafe in Fishguard, which will be using waste/surplus food and volunteer labour to provide cheap and nutritious meals to the local population. Of course we won't be able to buy advertising space on telephone booths.
(If you magnify you may be able to spot that someone has given a rather more succinct verdict than mine on the Domino's meal-deal.)
Another contribution to the One Street theme.
