I remember my grandparents and great uncles and aunts saying that if there’s one thing the youngsters of today needed it was military service. I would add ‘travel.’ Talk about a sense of balance. I do mean all types of travel: budget, luxury, hard yards, explore. The hope would be to give a sense of our world away from the blind self infatuated perspective we are so often fed in our spoon fed west.
Here in India there is poverty laid bare in a way that is both beautiful and hideous at the same time. It leaves you asking lots about yourself.
On the beach earlier we met Gita. She was selling jewellery. She was maybe mid 30’s and has three kids. They are all being schooled. Gita has had her business since she was 8. She has never had any education. She speaks fluently in many languages including English and Russian. She was saying it’s essential to speak Russian if you are going to stand any chance of getting Russians to buy gear. Us British are a much easier crowd apparently.
I’m left with a feeling of extreme gratefulness for having met Gita, whilst balancing it with my good fortune of, well you know the rest.
The cattle on the blip were walking up the road as we headed down it to the Indian Ocean. As you do.
The Indian night once again accompanies my typing up of today’s blip along with this superb tune from the truly wonderful Chartreuse.
