The joy of Christmas
There's a lot of joy in Christmas, joy in new toys, in good food and good company. There's often pain too, particularly for my family in missing the people who aren't there to celebrate with us, but joy too in remembering them, in telling family stories, in commenting on the colour of the gravy (it's a thing in our family), in winding each other up and laughing at silly jokes.
The greatest joy for me is in the reason we celebrate. This morning in church we sang 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing', which ends with the words below. I couldn't do any better.
Hail! the heaven-born Prince of peace!
Hail! the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die:
Born to raise the son of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King!"
