The Brown Pelican is common to Southern Louisiana and Texas. They are very big, with a wing span of 7' or more. This one was approximately 2' large

If you drive across the causeway or along the beach front, chances are good you'll see some of the estimated 12,000 breeding pairs native to Texas and Louisiana.

But brown pelicans weren't always so easy to find. In the 1960s, you probably wouldn't have spotted a single pelican if you traveled across the entire 32-mile length of Galveston Island. Back then, only about 50 breeding pairs resided in all of Texas and Louisiana.

They seem to have recovered nicely as we saw several while riding the ferry crossing to Bolivar Island.
