Whale shark
We took a holiday to Djibouti. It is a tiny country, just east of Ethiopia, south of Eritrea, and north of Somalia (or properly Somaliland). It is mainly a dry, sad place. Sad because in spite of what must be a fair amount of money coming into the country from foreign military bases and customs duties, the people are desperately poor. Everything shipped into and out of Ethiopia by sea has to go through Djibouti, as Ethiopia is landlocked.
One of Ethiopia's exports is an addictive plant called chat, or khat. All of Djibouti's men seem to spend the afternoon chewing the leaves and getting stoned.
Despite all this, the trip was good fun. The highlight was swimming with the whale sharks. To use an overused phrase, these are gentle giants. Think "whale", not "shark". They are the largest fish in the world, and feed on plankton. The ones we saw were up to say 6-7 m long. You can see them reliably in the bay that is west of Djibouti city, from October to January.
Another thing to put on your bucket list. I could go back and swim with these guys every day for a month.
And we saw a manta ray too!
