I wonder what made them retreat?

This last illustration from the 'The blind saint of Messalina' represents a happy ending to the story. Apparently adult Michael's sight has been restored, and he has married the daughter of Victor and Elaine. The text that accompanies the illustration reads:

"I wonder what made the men of the land retreat so many years ago?" said Michael, dreamily.
"A saint or hero, perhaps" replied his princess.
