New South Wales burns

Out for an early morning jog. Rather more running this morning than yesterday, although still a fair bit of walking. Hadn't been out long when I saw the sun coming out from behind some clouds. A very strong colour from the effects of the burning forests in New South Wales. 

Later this morning we headed south and west to Raglan for a few days. Along with the Tsukens we are renting a house for the four nights we'll be here. Daughters and Auckland grandsons came separately and will stay in Raglan at the same motel we stayed at last year.

I've added an extra photo. We broke our journey in Rangiriri, the site of a very important battle in the New Zealand Land Wars. As well as visiting the old Pa site, and seeing the scale of what was produced quickly and by men and shovels, we went to the Pie Shop. They scored 4th place in the 2019 NZ cafe pie making competition. Superb pies. 

On the wall behind the counter and till, was this print of a Lindauer portrait of Wiremu Tamehana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa. We were told (a) that he tried very hard to prevent the warring, by promoting negotiation, and (b) also told that Governor Grey responded to Wiremu's request to sell some land by saying he would never sell land because either he would be dead or a slave. I'll check with daughter C, the historian.

I have found an official piece about Tarapipipi . He sounds like a really good man who was driven by a desire to protect the people.
