First Day
Well the first day of 2020 was a full one! Quick walk for Oscar then up to the hens. Back for breakfast then out for Oscar's playdate with Ivy. Back home, shower, lunch and then off to Crackington Haven and the sea with The Exile!
It was a packed beach and we found Circus Girl, Homeopathic Girl and her partner The Musician by a lovely fire. Party Girl and Ebay Man went straight to the cafe for food! All of them were nursing hangovers to varying degrees! Vegan Jo's partner turned up with Kess and Oscar was tormented by watching him chase after sticks so we took Oscar and Ginger down to the water. At one point wading across the pooled water I felt myself sinking in the sand and had to extricate myself quickly, turning round I realised Oscar was having the same problem! Once he got to rock he would not move and it took some encouragement to get him to leap towards me! Once by the water Oscar ran away from the waves and went barking and lunging mad at the other dogs running free on the beach! It took all my strength to hold onto him! Hopefully as he gets older I can let him off the lead but for the moment he is would get too overexcited and boisterous! At one point he became intent on digging in the sand! More photos here! of Oscar!
We headed back up to the fire, led by Ebay Man. He chose the hardest route over the slippery rocks and I detoured to avoid slipping or falling and watched the others precariously making their way! The Exile finally realised it was not the way to go and turned round and came my way! Back to the fire where The Carpenter and his new partner had joined us and then my ex with his wife! We sat round the fire a bit longer then headed to the cafe for a warming drink! Hot chocolate and carrot cake for me!
We gave The Musician a lift back as the others had come in the Carpenters van and they suddenly had to go down to St Austell to retrieve his partners daughters who was not happy staying with her dad! The Exile had to snuggle with two very tired dogs in the back! The musician said it was like being with filmstars with the two dogs - he'd not experienced the constant attention and questioning of people about them before! They are pretty amazing when seen together! We had people stopping to take photos of them and one young woman got her partner to stop their car so she could get out and meet them!
The conversation on the drive home was fascinating - The Musician had been reading a book called On Fire by Naomi Lien and we'd both listened to a Radio 4 programme episode on Could An ancient Athenian Fix Britain? She explained how capitalism had to deny climate change and how we needed a new political system. The Athenians had one where people were drawn to govern from the masses, rather like a jury, they would listen to experts before deciding on policies and actions. The Musicians son had talked to him over Christmas saying how his generation was split between those unwilling to bring children into this world and resentful they were the ones facing a bleak future due to the actions of previous generations. Apparently some had a nihilistic response, live how they want and to hell with the environment! The Musician also brought up how it was posited that people now wouldn't sacrifice their living standards to provide a better future for others. I stated how many sci-fi films had a future where the the rich lived on in luxury whilst the workers and poor remained on a blighted earth. I'd read an article way back on how sci-fi writing was actually based on cutting edge science and was depicting a future where science had taken us over the edge. The journey was over in a flash! The Exile joined me for a glass of bubbly then Oscar and I collapsed and had an early night!
