Southend and the Mull of Kintyre
Today, we built our day around the forecast. I headed out this morning for an hour with Little Dog only to find Rich still in bed on my return! It then lashed it down for a couple of hours but, with an hour and a bit to drive, we set out while it was still raining. You can’t stay most of the way down the peninsula, nor spend your journey singing it without visiting the Mull of Kintyre.
Our luck and timing were extraordinary.
Ireland, just 12 miles away, was starting to appear out of the gloom but it just got better and better. The sun’s rays through the cloud and mist danced across the sea between a letterbox of darkness above and below. As we walked towards the lighthouse, The clouds parted and out came the sun more fully. Little Dog can’t cope with too much hillage so I went about half way and pottered back up the hill while Rich continued down. (Good choice given she limped some of the way back up.)
The approach road is amazing in itself and we enjoyed it more knowing we were heading back to civilisation. My hope was to time a visit to Southend as the sun went down, with the bigger hope being you could see the sun. It all worked to plan with beautiful light, white foaming rollers washing over the beach and an exquisite spot at Dunaverty castle to watch it from. Little Dog (with returning limp) and Rich didn’t quite make it there but this time, I enjoyed the full outing and met them back at the car.
With Doc Martin finished, we’re feeling a bit lost but we’ve plumped for film night tonight. Bohemian Rhapsody should do the trick.
