Turns out if you apply too much pressure to an e-ink screen you get this rather funky tartan effect. Mercifully, because this thing is about seven generations of technological advancement out of date now, I scored a replacement on Ebay for £30 and it arrived today; this was taken after the process of deregistering the busted one, setting up the replacement and loading all my books onto it.
