the good old days
While waiting for a bus home from Dumfries, I noticed this horse trough on the Whitesands and wondered why it was still here...The trough was gifted to the town in 1886 by a Miss McKie of Moat Brae, who also paid for the Buccleuch Bridge to be widened and improved. The inscription on it reads "The righteous man regardeth his beast".
While researching this at the bus stop, frozen to the bone, I also discovered that Dumfries holds the record for the highest temperature in Scotland. That was back in July 1908 when they were sweltering in 31.5°C.... .
