The dropped stitch

An advertisement from The Little Girl's Knitting and Crochet Book, edited by Flora Klickmann.

It belonged to my aunt and is one of a series of three. Much treasured.

The books date to around 1915 and were published by The Girls' Own Paper, apparently a highly successful magazine featuring careers advice for girls, advice on style and dress, photography competitions and crafts.

I made several patterns from these pages as a child - various sewn and knitted dolls' clothes, and a doll's cradle constructed from cardboard pieces, each covered in fabric.

A window onto another world.
