Nuala with the hula

In Belfast, as I’m sure in other cities, we like to give our sculptures nicknames. This is a rendering in stained glass of the Beacon of Hope (by sculptor Andy Scott) in Thanksgiving Square beside the river Lagan. Referred to locally as Nuala with the Hula.

The sculpture is included in a stained glass window in Belfast City Hall that also has other iconic Belfast structures. Can you spot The Big Fish? The item that we liked best was that the window had the words of “I’ll tell me ma” (also known as The Belle of Belfast City). Whenever we made school exchange trips to other countries this song was our go-to offering for entertainment!
