The Monkey Pole

The 'Monkey Pole' on the bents bear Cairnbulg Harbour was used for rocket practice by the coastguards. A rocket with a line attached was fired towards the pole from the nearby look out station. In the case of a shipwreck the line would have enabled the crew to be rescued by breeches bouy. On a night when storm Brendan is battering the coast it is easy to imagine how terrifying an experience this must have been.
