Every time I visit this 13th century church, I marvel at this amazing chest, which is about 4ft wide and 3ft high. It's tucked away in the childrens' corner at the far end behind the font. 

I only discovered today that it was probably made especially for the church, as it is decorated with daisies (marguerites, the symbol of St Margaret the Queen). Also that is was most likely what is called a Dole Chest. This would have been used for storing bread, which was given out to the poor after services.

600 years later and the poor are still with us. Many churches now have a box at the back which fulfils a similar purpose, known today as the Food Bank..
