Does it get better than this?
An early start with my thumb out and thankfully I didn’t have to wait long before a lovely Israeli guy stopped and took me first to get my boat ticket and then to the start of my walk.
The first half had a kind of dream like quality to it, passing over turquoise pools on swing bridges, into the shady forest where I feel certain the Ents must live. Although not the location for the filming of Fanghorn forest, it’s not that far away and I would put money on the chances of it having the same trees and undergrowth.
Then the scene changed a bit halfway through the day as the trail wound it’s way through the tangle of tree roots up the side of the gorge. At times the trail disappeared entirely and there was only the orange markers guiding you over steep land slides, eroded edges with no path left and then a rock face with a chain to pull yourself up. This seemed to go on for a very long time and was glad to finally see the straight lines of the hikers hit appearing in a small clearing.
Great wee things, very basic but very welcome and above all else provide protection from the sandflies.
