St. Nicholas Chapel

St Nicholas Chapel is perched at the top of The Island in St. Ives and dates back to Medieval times. St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors and the chapel was a focal point of worship for local sailors. However, in the 18th century fit was used by 'Preventative Men' to keep watch for smugglers, for whom the island was the perfect landing place for contraband.

It's been a beautiful day, although a bit on the chilly side. I drove down through the town to park this morning. Not for any reason of laziness, but because Elly is on crutches at the moment having broken a leg in a riding accident a few weeks ago. She's pretty mobile but the steepness of the hills down to town seem to me like a risky descent. We had a good walk round the town and found a barber for Oscar to get his haircut. We'd given Phoebe and Paul carte blanche to enjoy the day how they liked. They chose to walk the coast path to Zennor and got a bit muddy, I gather.

After a bit of relaxation this afternoon, Marian took the kids down to the hotel to use the pool and I walked down to the town and up to The Island in the hope of a sunset. Nice colour but on a cloudless day, there wasn't much texture in the sky.

I've adde a few more to my trip album here
