Not a pretty sight

As promised the team arrived to take away the whale. First it had to be taken apart and this was dirung that process. Remind me never to apply for a job as a whaler.
In a grim sort of way, it was fascinating to hear the experts talk about how it has died - probably live stranding - and what it had been eating - squid. This particluar species, Cuvier's beaked whale,  is one of the deepest diving of all mammals, they regularly dive to 3 km, and we know almost notihng about its popualtion although it seems likely that the seas around Scotland hold a signifcant proportion of the world population.
The worst thing was probably either the smell or the horrendous parasite alien-like creatures living in the kidney.
All good science, if on a large and bloody scale.
