Yealands Winery
M and l did the 7k trail through Yealand's Seaview wine estate. An interesting winery set up by a rather charismatic character, Peter Yealand used all sorts of innovative schemes to run this winery in an organic way as financially possible.
All cuttings, skins, pips from the vines and grapes are mixed and eventually fed back onto the land. Seasonal inter-row plantings of wild flowers, grasses and herbs are grown between the vineyard rows to help the soil and discourage pests and disease without using chemicals.
Baby doll sheep to nibble the grass between the vinerows
Chickens running free to help keep insects populations down
New Zealands largest solar installation
Last, but not least experimenting by playing classical music to the plants during sunlight hours as an experiment on one tract of the estate, it apparently keeps the workers happy and perhaps the plants?
The scenery along the coastal section of this estate is heart stoppingly beautiful, looking out over Cook Strait to Wellington in the north island.
