These are Lai see packets also known as red packets ... blipped a few times in the last few years during CNY.

These packets contain “brand new” notes of money and given out to children, single people and those who serve you, like gardeners, cleaners, check-out people, bus drivers, etc ... And as expats here, it is expected of us! And yes, people at supermarkets suddenly become very friendly towards you during CNY!

They’re handed out from day 1 of CNY and up to two weeks after.
