Scott Monument

Built in 1844 to commemorate the life of Sir Walter Scott, this Gothic monument is 61 m high and stands near Waverley Station ( called after his Waverley books). It was designed by George Meikle Kemp who won a competition to design it. It features 64 of his characters carved by different sculptors and inside is a statue of Scott in Carrara marble with his dog beside him. Unfortunately the designer was not at its inauguration as he’d fallen into the Union Canal on his way home from the site on a foggy night in 1844 and drowned.
