The Bandstand Bicycle Kid, Maidstone
I was dog tired by Friday but don't quite understand why. It's been the quietest start to a working year for a long time. I think it's a combination of the weather (mostly grey, damp and coldish), lethargy (because of not much to to do) and feeling slightly low and depressed. Maybe each is bleeding into the other. So I decided to try and up my exercise levels and have the odd treat to see if that will help.
Today involved two lots of exercise, a lovely meal in the town centre and a four mile walk back from there (where I took today's "triptych" of the bandstand bicycle kid).
In the second image is the whole family, which seemed to include a mamil (middle-aged man in lycra) for a dad. He was bellowing at the little boy to "go faster" over the shallow steps around and through the bandstand. To be fair he was holding his own, but it all seemed a wee bit joyless.
Funnily enough, further along the walk back I encountered another family of four, this time all on their own bikes. Unfortunately, the smallest of the two lads was crying his eyes out as he cycled along. The dad was getting more and more exasperated and the poor mum kept having to stop to try and console him. Maybe the weather was getting to all of them!
I did feel better after the exercise and the longish walk, though, so I'm going to try and keep it up to see if it elevates my mood and puts a bit more of a spring in my step.
By the way, the buildings in the background are a set of massive blocks of flats being built on the site of the old Maidstone library complex. I'll use a term by Prince Charles if I may - "a monstrous carbuncle" and a blot on the landscape.
