Robben Island

An emotional and humbling visit to Robben Island being shown round by a former political prisoner. After supporting Amnesty and taking part in anti-apartheid marches I was lucky enough to see Mandela on his first visit to London so it meant a lot to be here. Our guide was sent here aged 17 and was sentenced to 20 years but got released April 1991. Given new names - his was from Sparks to 5683 and Mandela to 46664. The conditions were appalling.
I have walked 8 miles today and need to sleep.
After getting off the boat we went to the Silo modern art gallery then met our guide at 5pm to walk around the colourful coloured area where the Asians were moved to from Section 6. All the houses were such pretty colours. We went to Arch for the Arch(bishop) Tutu and Rhodes park and more before a quick dinner and a welcome beer.

We are driving off tomorrow on our 5000 km adventure so my posts will be limited if the exist at all.

The collage is me looking from Robben Island to Cape Town, Mandela’s cell and our guide Sparks who said he held no bitterness
