Castlerigg Stone Circle

A day of bright sunshine and showers. We visited a few of our favourite places and dodged the worst of the showers. There was snow on the higher fells which always looks beautiful and the sun breaking through the clouds made beautiful patterns on the hillsides. I took hundreds of pictures today, none of which caught the beauty of it all but I think this maybe was the closest.
English Heritage tells me that Castlerigg is among one of the oldest stone circles in England raised around 3000BC. It has 28 stones (originally there were 32) arranged in a large cicle about 30 metres in diameter and it is thought that, unlike the bronze age burial sites, these circles with their obvious entrance points were some kind of meeting place for the Neolithic peoples.
