Harry's journal

Gear talk!

During last year I have done quite a lot of video work, mainly video lectures and pedagogic vlogs. For this purpose, I have mostly used an outstanding Lumix g80, a camera owned by our institution at the university. Of the three cameras in my life the Lumix is by far the most convenient camera for doing the video work I do.

But as I also do videos as freelance projects, I have felt obligated to use my own gear. The Fuji X-E3 has done the job OK, but it is by no means built for making videos. I can’t see if the recording is on when I film myself, the recording time is very limited, and it lacks a flippy screen and headphone jack for monitoring video and sound. However, the colors of Fuji videos are amazing and just for the sake of what I can get in camera, I actually prefer theresult from the Fuji much more than I appreciate what I get from the Lumix. Lumix is easier to use, but the Fuji files are much more fun to work with.

As it is now, I lust for a more video centric camera, that could replace my good old Nikon D610 This sensation of gear lust is one of the worst things about photography. I love camera gear, but I just hate buying it. It all comes down to the anxiety of making the purchase; spending all that money and dueling about if you made the right choice or not.

To be honest, I have not seen a camera during the past few years that I like to spend money on. I am very reluctant to change systems so I will most probably stick to Nikon and Fuji. The Nikon Z cameras where a real disappointment when they came out. Really annoyed by the price of the adapter and the need to change memory card system. The Fuji XT-3 has a lot to offer, but I have not wanted to go all in with APSC, once I have learned to appreciate FF. The battery life of mirrorless systems has also been an issue that I don’t feel comfortable with.

However, Nikon has just come out with the perfect camera for me – the D780. A proper DSLR with everything you could hope for when it comes to video features. It really feels that there finally is a camera out there that I really want. But, oh man that price is salty. I know it will most probably come down by the end of the summer. Hopefully they will offer decent replacement deals.

Then again there are all these rumors about a new Fuji! Go figure.
