The appeal for me in this image comes from the strong lines of the thicker branch clearly delineated against featureless white snow. It's twisted form gives it a bit of attitude (viewed in anthropomorphic terms). As humans we tend to look for characteristics we can relate to.

I like the clump of grass on the right which repeats the triangular shape of the thicker branch. Also, the twig in the upper right echoes the form of its more stocky neighbour.

Sometimes it's strange what catches our eye.
