Pete (Steve's dad) tells me that before STD dialling, out of area calls from an old red phone box had to go through a phone operator. To connect  you put 4 old pence into the box, pressed button A and dialled 0 for Operator. `if no one answered your connected call,you then pushed button B to get your 4d back. high tech eh!

The 4d was only the connection charge, you then had to keep shoving coins in to keep talking!
