2/2/2020 GROUNDHOG DAY

Today is Groundhog Day.  It is a popular tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog ( ground squirrel ) emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness Spring will arrive early. The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsatawney in Pennsylvania centering around a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsatawney Phil  has become the most attended.  I watched the ceremony today on YouTube.

" In a lightly falling snow Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring in front of record crowd at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa., on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, 2020.  This is 134th annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney."

My blip is my video copy of the film Groundhog Day ( released in 1993 ) starring Bill Murray as a weatherman who goes to report on the ceremony and becomes trapped there reliving the same day over and over again - until he becomes a nicer person and then time moves on. This used to be a favourite family film of ours - watched many many times until we seemed to know every word.  The term "groundhog day" is now commonly used in the English language to describe a recurring situation.
