A place in time

Wonderful Wednesday

A great line dancing session today for our "Just Dance Wednesday".  A solid hour of dancing without break and no tuition...just a chance to wrack our brains and remember all the steps ourselves.  Lovely jubbly.

Then on to see Mum for lunch in the café before popping out to the big Tesco in Aldershot and Dunelm in Farnborough (which is Mum's favourite shop at the moment, bless her).  Little by little Mum is replacing the items lost in the fire, so today we picked up a salad spinner, a water filter jug and a new bedside lamp, plus a few other oddments.

Apparently, when I was packing Mum's purchases in Tesco, the lady on the till was watching me intently (I was completely unawares, you understand) so as soon as we left the store my Mum said "she was taking you out a winding".  Crikey, I haven't heard her come out with that phrase in years!  I've tried looking up the meaning or origin of the saying but haven't managed to find it yet.  That said, Mum was born in the East End of London and she reckons it was a regular phrase there...meaning "she was gawping at you".  Somewhat like, "back doubles" (for shortcuts) and  "turnings" for side roads.  When I studied sociology at sixth form one of the required texts was "Family & Kinship in East London" where the two phrases above were remarked upon as being particular to the East End.

Oh, and finally, the good news is that those lovely Blipfoto peeps have sorted out my journal & membership status.  (Big grin)

Thought for the day:

"A people without the knowledge of their past, origin & culture is like a tree with no roots."  (Irish, Reuplican & Proud)
