Mulatu Astatke at the Old Fruitmarket
I have come to the conclusion it's quite difficult to take photos of bands in concert, in low light and lots of people moving around... not to mention tonight's band had numerous members and instruments so it was pretty difficult to see what was going on anyway. Much better just to listen.
This is Mulatu Astatke, Godfather of Ethio-jazz, and his band. You can actually see him in profile down on the left-hand side (he's the one who isn't a twenty-something), but I thought you might like to see a bit of the venue for a change. The Old Fruitmarket was renovated a few years ago, but they retained the signboards of the wholesalers and it's rigged up with fairy lights. With cabaret seating and people leaning over the balconies, it was pretty cool, to go with the music.
We should have had Lucas Santtana in support but he wasn't there, so we got RM Hubbert from Glasgow instead, he played a good guitar as well.
