The Judges Lodgings were built in 1849 to accommodate the judges holding the assizes, twice each year. The building was considered to be eclectic, eccentric and picturesque - I leave you to judge.

The move of the assizes from Buckingham to Aylesbury is a big factor in the establishment of Aylesbury as the County town of Buckinghamshire from 1948.
