Gliding heaven
On the road by just after 10.00am and didn't' get my second cuppa until after midday largely because of a stop at the Waitaki Dam - fascinating! One of 7 dams along the Waitaki River, and despite the obvious advantages of them producing plentiful Hydro Electric Power I can't help but wonder what the valley would have been like before man stepped in and literally changed it's course.
On then to Omarama, New Zealand centre for gliding and with the heat - and presumably the thermals - rising the way they did today, it looked to be a great day for it today. If you check the planes on the ground in the background you might manage to pick up quite a strong heat haze. Yes - HEAT! Apparently Omarama got to about 29 degrees today and Twizel, just a small handful of kms up the road cracked 31! Heat is something I've missed whilst I've been in the south.
A quick shop at Twizel before returning to the banks of the Ohau canal, a stones' throw from the local salmon farm - for tonight's rest.
