Day 043/20. Why are the pipes so big?

Our whole neighbourhood looks like a scene from the movie '1917' at the moment while Virgin Media install 'superfast' broadband along the roads.
What I cannot understand is why the pipes they are laying in the trenches they dig and then cover are so big? Isn't Fibre cabling really small?
