Training in Budding
One of our contributions to horticulture in Malawi is to train interns, who come to us from the Natural Resources College, in the capital, Lilongwe, to produce improved seedlings by budding and grafting.
Here Benidicto and Robert are showing them bow to bud oranges.
They begin with lemon seedlings and attach an orange bud to the stem. It's skilled work and we have huge success.

Budding is a form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud on another one. The new organism remains attached as it grows, separating from the parent organism only when it is mature. Since the reproduction is asexual, the newly created organism is a clone and is genetically identical to the parent organism.
