My birthday. Plans for a posh afternoon tea in Edinburgh were abandoned  because heavy snow was forecast. Of course, not one flake fell. But I was more than happy to go round to our local, the Birdhouse Tearoom at the Walled Garden. They do a very nice, very traditional, all home-made spread, and put the cakes you can't eat into a bag for you to take home without being asked. See extra for the spread, not much went into the bag ....

We sat by a window and watched the birds on the feeders - the usual tits and nuthatches that abound in our garden, but also long-tailed tits, tree sparrows and siskins. We've not had many of those this year.  They sell these birdhouses in the shop. Maybe I should buy one, ours are a bit rough and ready in comparison.  

This year I have a mystery present. It came from Amazon with no note to say who sent it. It's a very long, thin hot water bottle in a furry cover. I've enquired of anyone who has rung today, and they all deny all knowledge. It must be someone who knows I feel the cold ...
