Elibank Castle
A little local History
Elibank Castle was home to Sir Gideon Murray and his wife Margaret and their several children at the time of The Fray of Elibank in 1611. An attempted cattle theft by William Scott of Harden led to William Scott being captured and imprisoned in the castle's dungeon. Offered the choice of hanging or marrying the Murrays' ugly daughter Agnes (Muckle Moothed Meg), William chose marriage, for which we should all be grateful for otherwise we would never have known the literature of Sir Walter Scott, a direct descendent from that union.
