Juniper

I had the satisfaction today of tracking down one of the small, isolated populations of Common Juniper (Juniperus communis) - one of our three native conifers - that still grow wild on the South Downs.

The species has a very fragmented distribution here in the British Isles, unlike in other parts of its vast range.

It was good to see so many seedlings around the older plants at this location. There was a good balance of male and female plants and plenty of berries to be seen on the females.
